Father, son surrender

HARTINGTON — A father and son from Yankton have turned themselves in to the Cedar County Jail in Hartington on warrants related the 2017 death of a 21-year-old woman.

After doing so, both Derrik J. Nelson, 26, and his father, J. Douglas Nelson, 64, made bond late Tuesday afternoon on their respective warrants and were released.

Derrik Nelson faces felony charges of motor vehicle homicide, failure to render aid, driving under the influence causing serious bodily injury and tampering with evidence, in addition to two misdemeanors.

He posted 10 percent of a $100,000 bond and was ordered not to have contact with any co-defendants.

J. Douglas Nelson faces a misdemeanor charge of being an accessory to a felony by concealing evidence.

He posted 10 percent of a $10,000 bond and was also ordered not to have contact with any co-defendants.

The case in question involves the death of Jessi L. Anderson last summer. She was found deceased near Fordyce after apparently having been thrown from an all-terrain vehicle.

Both men are scheduled to appear in Cedar County District Court on Monday, May 14, at 9 a.m. for arraignment.
