Teen charged in fatal Montana shooting pleads not guilty
KALISPELL, Mont. (AP) — A teenager accused of killing a man in northwest Montana during what investigators say was an argument over drugs has denied two felony charges.
Martin Chandler appeared in Flathead District Court on Thursday and pleaded not guilty to deliberate homicide and felony use of a firearm stemming from the Feb. 14 death of 54-year-old William Melton.
The 19-year-old was arrested near Columbia Falls soon after Melton was killed at his home in Coram.
A Columbia Falls police officer and a Flathead County sheriff’s deputy responded to a report of gunfire at Melton’s home and arrived to find the man with a gunshot wound to the chest. Two portable meth labs, one of which was in Melton’s home, were found during the investigation.
