NWS: Tropical air mass to cause showers all week

July 23, 2018

It won’t be the best week for a vacation at the beach.

The National Weather Service has a chance of showers every day this week.

Most days will be mostly cloudy.

The only mostly sunny day is on Sunday. Yes, Sunday.

Some showers from the tropical weather has the ability to produce heavy downpours.

“With a tropical air mass in place, scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms are possible once again today,” the NWS says.

“Highs will be near normal, but with uncomfortably high humidity levels. Offshore high pressure slowly retrogrades west on Tuesday, which will bring a decrease in precipitation chances. A cold front will then bring more unsettled weather Wednesday.”

Why so much rain?

Blame it on a tropical air mass.

In its forecast discussion, the NWS says, “a weakening upper trough over the Ohio and Tennessee Valleys interacts with an upper low dropping southeast from eastern Canada. This will allow the stalled out boundary west of the area to get kicked eastward Wednesday into Thursday before dissipating in close proximity. More importantly though, it will interact with a atmospheric river streaming northward out of the tropics. Numerous showers and isolated thunderstorms will work across the area from late Tuesday night into Thursday morning with heavy rainfall and the potential for flash flooding.”
