Man accused of shooting 2 brothers in southeast Nebraska

HEBRON, Neb. (AP) — A 21-year-old man is facing charges in connection with the fatal shooting of one man and the wounding of the man’s brother in southeast Nebraska.

Michael Lewis was charged Monday with first-degree assault and using a weapon in connection with the incident around 3:30 a.m. Saturday. His lawyer, Ben Murray, says Lewis acted in self-defense after the brothers came to his home.

Investigators said in court documents that the shooting happened during a break-in at Lewis’ home.

The Thayer County Sheriff’s Office says the younger brother was pronounced dead later at Thayer County Health Services. The Nebraska State Patrol identified him as 28-year-old Remington Elting, of Davenport.

The wounded older brother was flown to a Lincoln hospital. He’s been identified as 33-year-old Reuben Elting, also of Davenport.
