HHS girls lose at Parkersburg South
HUNTINGTON — Huntington High’s girls basketball team had its first win of the regular-season come against Parkersburg South nearly two months ago.
As the teams ended their regular seasons, the Patriots made sure to repay the favor to the Highlanders.
Parkersburg South used a big second quarter effort and the hot shooting of McKenna Winans to earn a 67-45 win over the Highlanders in high school girls basketball action in Parkersburg on Wednesday night.
“They were on fire and we couldn’t do anything with them,” Huntington coach Lonnie Lucas said following the loss.
The game was a one-possession affair after one quarter, but the Patriots caught fire in the second period, scoring 25 points to extend their small lead out to a 38-23 halftime advantage.
The Highlanders were never able to make a run as the Patriots maintained their lead coming out of halftime and extended it to its final margin in the fourth quarter.
Alezha Turner had 15 points for the Highlanders while Katie Swann added 11. The Patriots limited inside threat Madison Slash to just six points.
Winans finished with 24 points in the win while Erin Williams added 14 and Sierra Hayes scored 13.
The Highlanders return to action this weekend, taking on George Washington in the MSAC Consolation Game at 2 p.m. on Saturday at South Charleston Community Center. Following that matchup, Huntington High (12-9) gets set for sectional play, which begins next Wednesday against Hurricane at Spring Valley High School.

WAYNE 80, SCOTT 51: Lakyn Adkins scored 16 points to lead a balanced Wayne attack that put up 56 first-half points en route to a lopsided win over Scott.
Adkins became the fourth player in Wayne women’s basketball history to score 1,000 points, joining her sister, Marshall freshman Aeriel Adkins, in that distinction.
Alana Eves added 14 points and Haley Wallace netted 11 for Wayne (19-3), who hit the 80-point mark for the third time in four games.
Brooke Burns scored 16 points and Leah Davis added 12 for Scott (2-20).
Wayne next plays in the Class AA, Region IV, Section 1 semifinals where they will host the Nitro-Point Pleasant winner at 7 p.m. on Wednesday.

FAIRLAND 52, ZANE TRACE 13: The second-seeded Dragons (18-5) raced to a 29-5 lead and rolled over the 15th seed Pioneers (2-20) in the Division III, Jackson 2 sectional tournament at Jackson High School. Allie Marshall scored 12 points and snagged 15 rebounds as 11 Fairland players scored. Emily Allen scored seven points and grabbed 12 rebounds for Zane Trace. The Dragons advance to the sectional championship game at 4:30 p.m. Saturday vs. either seventh-seeded Westfall or No. 10 seed Lucasville Valley at Jackson.

GIRLS SCHEDULING NOTE: Cabell Midland’s girls basketball team is seeded sixth and plays fifth-seeded South Charleston at 7 p.m. Thursday in a Mountain State Athletic Conference play-in game at the South Charleston Recreation Center.
Eight-seeded Spring Valley is at seventh-seeded St. Albans and 10th-seeded Capital plays at ninth-seeded Hurricane. Both games are 7 p.m. tip-offs.

WHEELERSBURG 72, SOUTH WEBSTER 49: The Pirates (21-0), ranked second in Ohio Division III, sent six seniors out with a victory over the Jeeps in their final home game. Tanner Holden led Wheelersburg with 27 points, Connor Mullins scored 14, Trent Salyers 12 and J.J. Truitt 10.Jacob Ruth scored 14 and Shiloah Blevins 11 for South Webster.
ZANE TRACE 58, IRONTON 57: Chad Ison made two free throws with less than one second left to lift the Pioneers (17-4) over the Fighting Tigers (15-6) at the Conley Center. Cam Evans led Zane Trace with 30 points. Ison added 14. Charlie Large paced Ironton with 24.
GALLIA ACADEMY 56, SOUTH POINT 53: Bailey Walker hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer in overtime to help the Blue Devils (12-8 overall, 8-5 Ohio Valley Conference) beat the homestanding Pointers (8-13, 5-8). Blaine Carter and Walker scored 17 each. Justin McClelland chipped in 10. Chance Gunther led South Point with 21 points. Austin Webb scored 11.
SCOTT 94, WAYNE 61: Jon Hamilton led four double-figure scorers with 19 and the visiting Skyhawks beat the Pioneers. Jagger Bell scored 14, Gavin Cooper 13 and Cole More 11. Wayne was led by Bryan Sansom’s 19 points.
POINT PLEASANT 70, SISSONVILLE 69: Brayden Canterbury’s layup with 5 seconds remaining gave the Big Blacks (5-13) a triumph over the Indians (3-14). Hunter Bush led Point Pleasant with 32 points. Kyelar Morrow scored 17. Watson Mosteller scored 33 and Will Hackney 16 for Sissonville.
VINTON COUNTY 56, RIVER VALLEY 47: The Vikings (9-10 overall, 6-4 Tri-Valley Conference) used an 18-4 run in the third quarter to beat the Raiders (3-18, 0-11) in Bidwell, Ohio. Gavin Orbaugh led Vinton County with 19 points. Eli Griffith scored 16. Jordan Lambert led River Valley with 17 points. Layne Fitch scored 11.
WATERFORD 59, SOUTH GALLIA 35: Russell Young scored 17 and pulled down 10 rebounds as the Wildcats (13-6 overall, 12-3 TVC) defeated the Rebels (12-9, 7-8) in Mercerville, Ohio. Holden Dailey scored 12. C.J. Mayse paced South Gallia with 12 points. Braxton Hardy scored 11.
BELPRE 52, WAHAMA 45: The Eagles (11-10 overall and 10-5 TVC) outscored the White Falcons 12-5 in overtime in Mason, West Virginia. Connor Baker led Belpre with 27 points. Jeremiah Stitt added 13. Brady Bumgardner paced Wahama (3-18, 3-13) with 10 points.
GREEN 63, PORTSMOUTH NOTRE DAME 58: Tanner Kimbler and Gage Sampson each scored 18 and Tayte Carver 14 as the Bobcats (13-8 overall, 7-6 Southern Ohio Conference) beat the Titans in Franklin Furnace, Ohio. Ben Mader scored 23 points for Notre Dame (1-19, 1-12). Caleb Nichols scored 15 and Jackson Clark 12.

ELLIOTT COUNTY 79, RUSSELL 52: The Lions used a 25-3 burst to beat the Red Devils (8-17) in Marvin Meredith Gym. Korbin Spencer led Elliott County (21-3) with 34 points. Gage Evans scored 15 and Tanner Dickerson and Kole Whitley 13 each. Tristan Miller led Russell with 24 points.
LINCOLN COUNTY 83, SHERMAN 60: Hunter Hill scored 26, Kaden Beckelheimer 16 and Coy Garretson 12 as the Panthers (18-3) rolled to a win in Seth, West Virginia. Chris Abbott led the Tide with 17 points.
