Local professor serves as pronouncer for the 2018 Regional Spelling Bee

March 18, 2018

Shreveport - Spelling bee pronouncers have one of the toughest jobs.

Dr. Thomas DuBose is an English professor at LSU-Shreveport and the pronouncer for this year’s regional spelling bee.

“As and English teacher and a linguist I’m very conscientious of pronunciation but, a lot of young people are going to be depending on this going well for them and I don’t want to disappoint anybody.”

Just like the competitors, Dr. DuBose is putting in work preparing for the big day.

“I’ve been practicing every day... English is one of the largest vocabularies of any language on earth because we’ve borrowed so many words from other languages so there are always words that some of us have never encountered and never used.”

Dr. DuBose says he’s got a plan should he run into trouble with a word

“Take a deep breath and then say it to myself. Make sure I’ve got the accents right and the vowels right.”
