Mexico City finds 3 abandoned newborns in 24 hours

September 4, 2019

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Mexico City prosecutors say authorities have three newborn babies abandoned in less than 24 hours.

The cases don’t appear to be related, but represent an unusual spate of abandonments.

A 2-day-old baby girl was found on a street on the city’s west side late Tuesday.

On Wednesday, a newborn boy was found in a cardboard box outside a school on the city’s south side.

Later, to the north, another newborn baby girl was found in a restroom at a shopping mall in a low-income neighborhood. All the babies were taken to hospitals for evaluation.

Abortion is legal in Mexico City, but adoption is often a discouragingly difficult process.
