VERONA — Jefferson opened its girls golf season with a fifth-place finish at Thursday’s 11-team Verona Invitational.

The Eagles finished with a team total of 394 strokes while Lakeside Lutheran took ninth with 407. Middleton won the event by posting a final tally of 336. Megan Gleisner led Jefferson with a 95. She was followed by Hailey Milbrath (96), Courtney Draeger (97), Bre De Blare (106) and Valorie Shamans (117, scratch).

“A pretty good start for the girls overall,” Jefferson coach Jeff Schmidt said. “We shot a 409 in this event last year and this course is pretty tricky.

“Megan had a really good round and so did Hailey shooting a career low. I kind of threw Val into the five-spot today and she played a really steady round. We got the nerves and jitters out today and now it’s time to get to work.”

Maya Heckman led Lakeside with a round of 93. Other Warrior scores came from Rebecca Lang (97), Maddison Fenner (105), Grace Thomas (112) and Ella Butzine (131, scratch).

Monday’s Rock Valley opener is at Alpine Valley in East Troy for both Jefferson and Lakeside.
