NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) — The New Haven Police Department is offering as much as $200 to encourage people to turn in firearms.

The gun buy-back program is taking place Saturday at the New Haven Police Academy.

Those turning in working firearms will receive gift cards in the amount of $50 for rifles and shotguns, $100 for handguns and $200 for assault weapons.

The goal is to take as many weapons as possible off the streets. Police say no questions are asked of those who bring in guns nor will they be charged with illegal possession of the weapons.

The police host the event with sponsorship from the Injury Free Coalition for Kids of New Haven and Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital Injury Prevention Program.
