Man gets prison time for embezzling veteran benefits

February 21, 2019

HUNTINGTON - A Huntington man received a federal prison sentence Tuesday after admitting to embezzling over $80,000 of his brother’s veteran’s benefits.

David Washington, 55, previously pleaded guilty to embezzlement. He was sentenced Tuesday to a six-month federal prison sentence. He will also spend six months on home confinement following his release. He was also ordered to pay restitution in the case.

According to U.S. Attorney Mike Stuart, Washington had been appointed to oversee his brother’s finances, which included receiving and managing benefits from the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Washington failed to submit accounting reports, which led investigators to question his leadership.

Washington admitted to mismanaging over $81,000 in funds and said he had spent his brother’s benefits for his own personal expenses.
