3 plead not guilty in fatal shooting of California girl, 12
SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (AP) — Three people have been charged with murder in connection with the shooting death of a 12-year-old Southern California girl.
The Daily Press newspaper reports (http://bit.ly/2wPJRmD) Anthony Pitts, Danielle Campbell and Reyna Mercado entered not guilty pleas at their arraignment Tuesday.
They were arrested following last week’s shooting in Victorville. Officials said Makiya Walls was inside her home when shots smashed through the front window and struck her.
San Bernardino County Sheriff John McMahon says the suspects had an ongoing dispute with the girl’s mother and Makiya was not the intended target of the shooting.
The girl’s mother, Maesha McCullers, wept last week as she described her daughter, calling her smart, witty, respectful, caring, and “the most innocent child with the biggest heart.”
