Congressman Says Jeffrey Dahmer Deserved Death

November 30, 1994 GMT

WASHINGTON (AP) _ Congress should take a lesson about justice from the fatal Wisconsin prison beating of serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer on Monday, Rep. James Traficant said Tuesday.

″This is certainly not a day to celebrate such a brutal killing,″ said Traficant, D-Ohio. ″But the truth is Jeffrey Dahmer earned it. He deserved it.″

Dahmer, who was serving 15 life sentences, was arrested in 1991. He admitted killing, mutilating and sometimes cannibalizing 17 young men and boys.

Traficant, who is known for his controversial floor speeches, said Dahmer ″should have been sentenced to death by a jury, not by a bunch of thugs in a prison.″

″This case clearly depicts the weaknesses of the American justice system. ... Congress should learn from a bunch of prisoners who provided some justice in America,″ he said.
