San Antonio tech companies offer killer perks to retain talent

October 17, 2017

At Digital Defense Inc., employees can enjoy a professional massage offered at no charge each month for “health and wellness purposes.”

It’s just one of many perks San Antonio area technology and cybersecurity companies are offering to employees to attract and retain talent.

Digital Defense also has darts, a foosball table as well as movie and sporting event screenings at the office, said spokeswoman Meg Grant. Free Red Bull, Monster, other sodas and snacks are also offered, she said.

The company hosts monthly “Friday Sync Sessions,” a networking opportunity with drinks and snacks for all employees, and off-site team building activities at places such as Topgolf and the Main Event, Grant said.

But Digital Defense isn’t all play no work. The company also reimburses employees for educational training and participation in cybersecurity events such as Black Hat and DefCon, Grant said.

San Antonio-headquartered Globalscape is no slouch either when it comes to perks.

The company has breakfast brought in every Thursday, “from tacos to pastries to parfaits/fruit,” and they also offer drop off and pickup dry cleaning service at the office, said Andrea Farmer, vice president of human resources at Globalscape.

Free snacks and drinks, as well as monthly employee appreciation lunches are all part of working at the company, Farmer said.

They also have lactation rooms for new mothers and a discounted gym membership program with Gold’s Gym, Farmer said.

“We have a number of games around the office to give our employees a chance to bond/let off steam like a foosball table, bean bag/cornhole toss, nerf guns, dart boards, etc.” Farmer added.

Banking, insurance and financial services giant USAA also likes keeping its employees happy.

It has several company stores on its main campus “where employees can buy anything from stamps and birthday cards to clothes and gifts, good last-minute shopping” said spokeswoman Laura Propp via email.

USAA employees enjoy free fitness center access, half priced healthy items in USAA cafeterias and tuition reimbursement for continuing education, Propp said.

“We also have Recharge Zones on our campuses with everything from elliptical trainers for a quick workout,” which is different from the company’s full fitness centers, to “sleeping pods for quick naps, ping pong and Wii,” she said.

USAA also has a sports league run through its fitness centers with sports like softball, tennis, soccer and basketball, Propp said.
