ROLLING PRAIRIE – A traffic stop on U.S. 20 on Monday afternoon led to the arrest of a South Bend man for being a violent felon in possession of a handgun, according to the La Porte County Sheriff’s Department.

Early Monday afternoon, a sheriff’s deputy was monitoring westbound traffic in the near U.S. 20 and CR-300E when he saw a passenger vehicle commit an infraction, according to sheriff’s Capt. Derek Allen. The deputy followed and initiated a traffic stop on U.S. 20 near Wilhelm Road.

The driver was identified as Donald R. Brewster Jr., 25, and the deputy soon determined that he had never been issued a driver’s license, Allen said, and a wrecker service was called to impound the vehicle.

“During an inventory and search, a loaded firearm was located within the passenger compartment of the vehicle,” he said.

Brewster was later charged with a Level 4 felony count of possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon, and a misdemeanor count of never receiving a license, Allen said.

He remained in the La Porte County Jail as of Tuesday on a $20,000 cash bond through Superior Court I.
