Diller-Odell falls to Johnson-Brock in MUDECAS semis

Johnson-Brock’s power was too much for Diller-Odell Tuesday night in the semifinals of the MUDECAS A Division Volleyball Tournament.

The three-time defending state champion Eagles defeated Diller-Odell in straight sets 25-20, 25-17.

Johnson-Brock will play at 8 p.m. in the championship game against the winner of Tuesday’s late game between Freeman and Bruning-Davenport-Shickley. That game wasn’t over by press time Tuesday night.

Diller-Odell will play in a third place game at 5 p.m. Thursday night against the loser of Freeman/BDS.

Diller-Odell was short a starter after losing Kirsten Bures in Monday night’s MUDECAS Tournament game. Despite that, the Griffins traded blows with Johnson-Brock early.


The Eagles scored first, but a kill by Emily Swanson and an ace serve by Kyleigh Barnts gave Diller-Odell a 2-1 lead.

Johnson-Brock went on to score the next eight points to force a Diller-Odell timeout and then out of the timeout, they scored three more to make it 11-3.

A double block by Addison Heidemann and Tori Smith followed by a kill from Mackenzie Vitosh made it 11-5. Johnson Brock scored the next two points, but Vitosh answered with another kill to make it 13-6.

Johnson-Brock extended their lead to 18-11, which forced another Diller-Odell timeout. Out of the timeout, the Griffins got kills from both Swanson and Heidemann to make it 18-13. Vitosh then answered a Johnson-Brock point with another kill to make it 19-14.

Johnson-Brock scored the next three points to make it 22-14. They would coast to the 25-20 win from there.

In the second set, Johnson-Brock jumped out to a 5-4 lead, but an ace serve by Smith followed by kills from Madelyn Meyerle and Vitosh gave Diller-Odell a 7-5 lead.

With the score 8-8, Johnson-Brock would score four straight points to make it 12-8. Vitosh ended the run with a kill, but Johnson-Brock score three straight points to lead 15-9.

They extended their lead to 19-10. Diller-Odell got to within five points, but never closer as the Eagles finished off the set 25-17.

Exeter-Milligan beats Palmyra

In a consolation game of the MUDECAS A Division, Exeter-Milligan defeated Palmyra in three sets 22-25, 25-22, 25-23.

With the win, Exeter-Milligan improves to 8-4 on the season and will have one more game in the MUDECAS Tournament. They will play in a consolation final at 2 p.m. against Falls City Sacred Heart on Thursday at the Truman Center at Southeast Community College.


With the loss, Palmyra drops to 6-3 on the season. They have been eliminated from the MUDECAS Tournament.

Sacred Heart wins thriller over HTRS

In the other consolation semifinal of the MUDECA A Division bracket, Falls City Sacred Heart was able to win a back and forth thriller over Humboldt-Table Rock-Steinauer 25-16, 16-25, 27-25.

With the win, Sacred Heart improves to 8-4 on the season and will play one more game in the MUDECAS Tournament. They will play in a consolation final at 2 p.m. on Thursday against Exeter-Milligan at the Truman Center of the Southeast Community College campus.

HTRS falls to 8-4 on the season. They are eliminated from the MUDECAS Tournament.
