Missisquoi River to rise above flood stage in Swanton

February 20, 2018

SWANTON, Vt. (AP) — Emergency officials in a Vermont town are warning that the Missisquoi River is expected to rise above flood stage overnight.

Swanton Emergency Management is recommending that residents who were affected by a January flood leave their homes before nightfall Tuesday and find other places to stay. The Red Cross was setting up a shelter at the local high school.

Police say about 11 homes housing more than 96 people, mostly along Route 78, were affected by river flooding from ice jams in January.

The river is expected to overflow its banks around 3 a.m. on Wednesday.

Residents of Johnson are also watching the Lamoille River, where ice jams caused flooding last month. The Red Cross is setting up a second shelter at Johnson State College.
