$25M ballpark renovation and Syracuse Mets lease approved
SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) — Upstate New York lawmakers have approved a $25 million renovation of NBT Bank Stadium and a 25-year lease for the Syracuse Mets.
The renovation and lease for the Triple-A baseball team was agreed to previously but cemented by a formal Onondaga County Legislature vote Tuesday.
The Syracuse Post-Standard reports Democratic representative Tom Buckel was the only opposing vote. He argues that building the stadium on the city’s North Side rather than downtown was a mistake. The location of the stadium was controversial when it was built in 1993 and talk of renovations has raised the issue again.
Other lawmakers have praised the Mets deal, saying it ensures the future of baseball in the city.
The project cost will be split between New York state and Onondaga County.
