Orangemen avenge loss to Gross

January 25, 2018 GMT

OMAHA -- It came down to the last second of the game, but the Beatrice boys basketball team was able to defeat Omaha Gross Tuesday night.

The Orangemen defeated the Cougars 45-44, avenging an earlier 57-45 loss last week at home in the River Cities Conference Tournament.

The game came down to some dramatic free throw shooting by Dillon Buss at the end of the game. Buss, who was 9 of 9 at the line, knocked down two free throws with 35 seconds left to tie the game at 42-42.

Then, with 0.3 seconds remaining in the game and his team trailing 44-42, Buss went to the line for three shots and made them all, giving the Orangemen the 45-44 win.

Beatrice had been playing from behind since the first quarter. They were down 10-6 after the first quarter, but closed that gap to 23-22 at half time.

Omaha Gross had a 35-30 lead after three quarters, setting up the dramatic fourth quarter in which the Orangemen outscored the Cougars 15-9 for the win.

Buss led the way for Beatrice with 21 points while Graham Southwick had 10 points, Andrew Mahoney had nine points, Logan Hutt had three points and Caleb Wallman had two points.

Trey Powers had 17 points to lead Omaha Gross.

The Orangemen are now 8-7 on the season and will be in action again Thursday when they play a make-up game at Hastings. Beatrice will then return home to play Ralston on Saturday at the Ozone in Beatrice.
