Gonzalez boots season-best 41-yard field goal versus Texans
HOUSTON - Despite two season highs for his brief NFL career, former Deer Park High School football player Zane Gonzalez couldn’t save the Cleveland Browns from their sixth defeat in six tries Sunday afternoon at NRG Stadium.
On the short end to a 33-17 score to the Houston Texans, Cleveland’s placekicker scored a season-high five points in the defeat. His previous best heading into Sunday’s action was four, a total he accomplished in Cleveland’s opening three defeats to Pittsburgh, Baltimore and Indianapolis.
Three of his five points Sunday arrived in the first quarter when he tied the game at 3-3 after connecting for a season-best 41-yard field goal with 3:19 remaining in the stanza. The Browns were looking at a go-ahead score with a first down on Houston’s 27-yard line, but the offense could only muster four yards, prompting the arrival of Gonzalez on the field.
The 41-yarder surpassed his previous top distance of 38 yards that he hit in the third quarter of a 24-10 loss to the Ravens last month.
Gonzalez is now 3-of-6 in field goal attempts with all three errant boots coming from deep distances, including one try from 50 yards and more.
He then scored his fourth and fifth points of the game with PAT kicks following two Cleveland touchdowns in the fourth quarter. He’s a perfect 11-for-11 in point-after scores this season, one of five NFL kickers who are perfect with 11 or more attempts. The others are Ryan Succop of Tennessee, Giorgio Tavecchio of Okaland, Brandon McManus of Denver and Cairo Santos of Kansas City.
In the Browns’ six games, Gonzalez has now scored 20 of Cleveland’s 94 total points.
Gonzalez is a 2013 Deer Park High School graduate, earning outstanding praise for his placekicking in the 2011 and 2012 seasons. In his junior year, he was a unanimous First Team All-District kicker, scoring 88 points, 35 points more than the second-place kicker.
He then earned a football scholarship to Arizona State where he set several records for the school.
