3 kids thrown from rolling SUV; 1 dead, 2 critical condition
HAMMOND, La. (AP) — Louisiana State Police say a 15-year-old has died and two children are in critical condition after being thrown from an SUV as it rolled over and over.
Trooper Dustin Dwight says in a news release that the driver, 38-year-old Viola Oliver II of Ponchatoula, also is in critical condition. He says she was cited for careless driving and failing to buckle up a 3-year-old and a 7-year-old.
Dwight says the state crime lab will analyze samples of Oliver’s blood.
He says 15-year-old Solomon Short of Ponchatoula died shortly after arriving at a hospital Sunday night. He didn’t know if Short and the other children are related.
Dwight says Oliver’s 2003 Ford Explorer rolled four or five times after running off Interstate 55 in Hammond, and Oliver had to be extricated.
