BHS swimmers host Senior Night against Pius

The Beatrice Co-op swimming and diving team hosted Lincoln Pius X Monday night at the Beatrice YMCA.

The boys team fell to the Thunderbolts 111-59 while the girls team fell 108-62.

It was also senior night for the team, which consists of swimmers from Beatrice, Norris, Fairbury and Freeman High Schools. The six seniors honored were Joe Wright, Makalah Scheele, Maddy Wagner, Andrew Yung, Cullen Papenhagen and Tyler Rice.

“Each of these seniors has been a great asset to the team, not only in the water, but as supportive and instructional teammates,” said Beatrice coach Marian Wallen. “They each will be greatly missed next season.”

As far as the dual went, it was the first loss of the season for the girls team.

“Pius is a very strong and talented swim team,” Wallen said. “They always push our swimmers to do their best. Unfortunately, our team was suffering with many illnesses and injuries tonight. We still ended the night with many personal best performances and a couple new state qualifiers.”

Jacob Mason had a secondary qualifying time in the 100-breaststroke as did Mikasa Lierman in the 100-freestyle.

First place finishes for Beatrice included Mikwena Lierman in the 50-freestyle; Colton Starck in the 50-freestyle; Faith Kelly in diving; Trey Billesbach in diving and Maya Moran in the 100-freestyle.

Personal best performances for the team included Cailey Biesecker in the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly; Ashley Hempfling in the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle; Cameron Knepp in the 50 freestyle; Carson Monhollon in the 50 freestyle and 100 breaststroke; Aiden Morrow in the 50 freestyle and 100 breaststroke; Joe Wright in the 50 freestyle; Tyler Rice in the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle; Michael Walsh in the 100 breaststroke and Sam Fortner in the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle.

Other personal bests included Matthew Griffieth in the 50 freestyle; Silas Jurgens in the 100 backstroke; Hayden Stevens in the 50 freestyle; Noah Bratt in the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle; Averi Kolb in the 100 freestyle; Mikasa Lierman in the 100 butterfly; Erik Holloway in the 500 freestyle; David Gray in the 100 backstroke; Lauren Behn in the 100 freestyle; Meg Rhodes in the 100 freestyle; Jacob Mason in the 100 freestyle; Cullen Papehagen in the 100 freestyle and Andrew Yung in the 500 freestyle.

Next action for the Beatrice team will be Thursday in a double dual against Omaha Skutt and South Sioux City. They will then travel to the Elkhorn Invite on Saturday.
