SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) — A Springfield man was sentenced Friday to 25 years in prison for the shooting death of an 18-year-old man in 2016.

Khalil Gaines, 24, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder last year for the killing of Landon Bays, who was found lying in a street in Springfield with a gunshot wound in March 2016. He died later at a hospital.

Police initially couldn’t identify Bays because he had no identification with him, and the case remained unsolved for more than two years, The Springfield News-Leader reported.

Authorities said Bays was shot while trying to sell marijuana to Gaines and Chad Murphy, 36, who is scheduled for trial in August.

In exchange for Gaines’s guilty plea, prosecutors agreed to recommend a sentence of no more than 25 years.

Gaines’s attorney, Robert McGee, said Gaines and Murphy planned to rob Bays and the shooting was accidental. Gaines was later arrested in Arkansas.
