‘Greatest American Hero’ reboot will apparently be set in Cleveland

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Believe it or not, a “Greatest American Hero” reboot is headed to the small screen and will apparently be set in Cleveland.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the lead role will be played by Hannah Simone, best known for her role as Cece on six seasons of “New Girl.” She’ll play Meera, described as a “30-year-old Cleveland woman whose talents include drinking tequila, singing karaoke and not much else,” that is, until “some aliens entrust her with a super suit to protect the planet.”

The series, if picked up, will join “The Drew Carey Show” and “Hot in Cleveland” as TV shows set here, but filmed in Hollywood.

Unlike the original, a one-hour action-drama which starred William Katt and ran from 1981-1983, the new series is being classified as a half-hour comedy. ABC gave the show, headed by Nahnatchka Kahn (“Fresh off the Boat,” “The B in Apartment 23″), a pilot order just two weeks ago.

“The Greatest American Hero” is just the latest on a growing list of classic shows being revived. “Roseanne” premieres on ABC next month, CBS is bringing back “Murphy Brown” next season, The CW is rebooting “Charmed,” and there’s been rumors about “Mad About You” and “The Office” getting second lives on NBC.

More importantly, it’s not yet known if that killer “Greatest American Hero” theme song -- yes, the tune on George Costanza’s answering machine message -- will resurface in the new show.
