SC man killed after shooting officer in protective vest
GREENWOOD, S.C. (AP) — An officer in South Carolina fatally shot a man with a gun who fired first during a struggle, hitting the officer’s bulletproof vest, police said.
The Greenwood police officer was responding to a domestic violence call Thursday night when Willie Lee Quarles Sr. started fighting, Greenwood Police spokesman Jonathan Link told media outlets.
Quarles shot the officer, but the bullet was blocked by a protective vest, and the officer fired back, killing him, Link said.
Quarles, 60, was shot once in the chest, Greenwood County Coroner Sonny Cox said. The officer was not seriously injured. Police didn’t release the officer’s name or any additional information.
The State Law Enforcement Division is investigating.
