Finland 1, West Germany 1

April 29, 1990

BERN, Switzerland (AP) _ West Germany tied Finland 1-1 Sunday to keep its slim hopes alive in the relegation pool of the World Hockey Championships.

It was the first point by the West Germans after losing eight consecutive games in the championships. Seven of the setbacks came in the preliminary round.

The United States, which tops the relegation standings, faced newcomer Norway in the other game later Sunday.

A tie would assure Norway of a berth in next year’s championships and send the Germans to the B Group next year.

Norway, playing in the championships for the first time in 25 years, had three points going into the game with the Americans.

Pekka Tirkkonen, assisted by Hannu Henriksson, scored at 7:56 in the third period to salvage the tie for Finland.

Andreas Pokorny put the Germans ahead at 16:40 of the second period.
