Sheriff: Scammers Targeting Residents Of The Abingtons

April 25, 2019

SOUTH ABINGTON TWP. — A number of residents living in the Abingtons reported being targeted recently by scammers representing themselves as sheriff’s deputies or county or federal officials, Lackawanna County Sheriff Mark McAndrew said. The scammers have been calling residents and telling them that they missed jury duty before providing instructions for how to pay fake penalties with cash or gift cards, McAndrew said. The sheriff’s office never conducts business over the phone, McAndrew said. Anyone who receives such a call should hang up immediately and call the sheriff’s office at 570-963-6719 or contact South Abington Twp. police through the county’s 911 Center, 570-342-9111. — JEFF HORVATH
