Bookkeeper accused of stealing more than $700K from employer
VENTURA, Calif. (AP) — Prosecutors say a bookkeeper in California stole more than $700,000 from a 72-year-old disabled man.
The Ventura County Star reported on Monday that prosecutors have charged 43-year-old Inez Marie Byars of Oxnard with five counts of felony grand theft, two counts of felony forgery, one count of identity theft and one count of theft from an elder of dependent adult.
Byars has pleaded not guilty and the Ventura County public defender’s office has been appointed to her case.
Senior Deputy District Attorney Marc Leventhal says Byars had worked for the owner of real estate company Discountland Inc. since 2006.
Prosecutors say Byars is being held in Ventura County jail with bail set at $1.5 million and is due back in court on Friday.
Byars faces up to 14 years in prison if convicted.
