Son: Mom was ‘a problem’ as their boat sank in 2016

August 23, 2019

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — A Vermont man whose mother was never seen again after their boat sank during a fishing trip in 2016 testified that his mother was “more kind of the problem than the solution” as the boat went down.

Nathan Carman took the stand for the second straight day Friday during a trial in Providence, Rhode Island to determine whether insurance companies must cover an $85,000 claim for the boat.

The Boston Globe reports that Carman told his mother, Linda Carman, to prepare for the worst-case scenario as the boat took on water.

Carman said after the boat sank, he yelled for his mother, but didn’t see or hear her.

Insurers are refusing to pay the claim, saying Carman made suspicious alterations to the vessel before leaving Rhode Island. Carman has denied that.
