Spring Valley baseball star Hunter Bellomy plans to sign with West Liberty State College on Monday. ... Spring Valley football standout Graeson Malashevich visited Ohio University last week. His Timberwolves teammates Wyatt Milum and Evan Ferguson visited Virginia Tech, which sent two assistant football coaches to Spring Valley’s home basketball game with Woodrow Wilson on Monday. Timberwolves running back Isaac Howard visited St. Anselm College and lineman Trae Caudill committed to Kentucky Christian University.

ODDITIES: Last week, Fairland defeated Portsmouth 45-26 in girls high school basketball. The Dragons outscored the Trojans 6-0 in the fourth quarter. Fairland held the ball the final 4:31 and Portsmouth let the Dragons run out the clock, staying in a zone in and near the paint. Several fans said they never had witnessed such a bizarre finish.
Woodrow Wilson’s boys basketball team took four charges in the first quarter of a 77-61 triumph over Spring Valley last week. The calls prompted howlings of “charge” from Timberwolves fans after nearly each whistle the rest of the first half.
Raceland basketball player Kyle Adkins made two free throws with 12 seconds to play to secure the Rams’ 63-58 victory over Fairview last week. Adkins made the key shots mere hours after attending his grandmother’s funeral.
ROUNDING UP: Greenup County honored former boys basketball coach Randy Ward last week. Ward, who also coached at Coal Grove and Portsmouth Clay, led the Musketeers to four state tournaments in the 1980s and 1990s. ... Winfield graduate and University of Kentucky high jumper Carly Hinkle set a personal-best last week, leaping 5 feet, 10.75 inches to finish second in the Razorback Invitational at the University of Arkansas. The jump was the sixth best in UK history. ... Covenant defeated Parkersburg Christian 74-30 last week. In that game the Roten brothers - Braden, Josh and Samuel - scored eight points apiece for the Eagles. ... Jay Lucas is the new head football coach at Coal Grove. Lucas, a former Hornets star, coached the last two seasons at Wellston. ... Coal Grove girls basketball coach Rick Roach won his 100th game Thursday. ... Former Spring Valley softball star Haley Caldwell hit a solo home run to lift Carson-Newman to a 1-0 victory over Young Harris in their season-opening game on Friday. ...
