Official: Officer justified in shooting at stabbing suspect
NORWICH, Conn. (AP) — A Connecticut prosecutor has ruled that a Norwich police officer was justified in shooting at a stabbing suspect who opened fire on the officer before killing himself.
Windham State’s Attorney Anne Mahoney released her decision Friday, saying Officer Damien Martin’s use of deadly force was appropriate because he feared for his life when suspect Brandon Uzialko shot at him.
The shootout on Oct. 24, 2017, occurred as police were looking for the 25-year-old Uzialko in connection with the stabbing of his ex-girlfriend’s new boyfriend, who survived.
Authorities say Martin shot Uzialko in the left shoulder area during the gunfire exchange. Police say Uzialko then fled and later shot himself in the head.
The medical examiner ruled that Uzialko died from the self-inflicted gunshot wound.
