Letter: You don’t have to wait for the next Drug Take Back Day

November 21, 2017 GMT

Although National Drug Take Back Day has passed, safely disposing of your unused prescriptions is still possible. My son lost his life to an opioid overdose after using opioids prescribed to me for a back injury and then forgotten in my medicine cabinet. I wish I had known then how important it is to dispose of unused medicines, especially opioids.

If you did not clean out your medicine cabinet before National Drug Take Back Day, you can still do it now. In addition to take back locations, easy to use drug deactivation kits can be used at home, any time, to safely and effective get rid of medicines you no longer need. Cleaning out medicine cabinets and disposing of the expired or unneeded medicines safely should be a regular part of everyone’s spring cleaning. Every half empty bottle of unused painkillers we dispose of decreases the chance that our loved ones will start down a path of addiction.
