China Recommends North, South Korea Co-Host Olympics
PEKING (AP) _ China on Sunday endorsed a North Korean suggestion that the two Koreas co- host the 1988 Summer Olympic games.
In a letter to Juan Antonio Samaranch, president of the International Olympic Committee, the president of the Chinese Olympic Committee said the proposal was ″worth serious consideration.″
″If the proposal can be realized, it will help to ease the situation in the Korean peninsula and will also be conducive to the peaceful unification of Korea and the solving of the problems that confront the Olympic movement,″ Zhong Shitong wrote.
The contents of the letter were disclosed Sunday by the official Xinhua news agency.
It was the first time China has publicly supported the proposal by North Korea, its close communist ally. China has no diplomatic relations with South Korea.
South and North Korean sports officials plan to discuss the issue early next month in Lausanne, Switzerland.
