Prep basketball: North Marion girls win AA title
CHARLESTON — Top-seeded North Marion (27-1) won its first girls basketball state championship since 2011 on Saturday, beating No. 2 Wyoming East 72-62 for the Class AA title at the Charleston Civic Center.
The teams were tied 31-31 at the half and 47-47 after three quarters. Leah Parrish opened the fourth period with a 3-pointer for North Marion to make it 50-47 and the Huskies never trailed again.
North Marion’s Taylor Buonamici set a state tournament record with 21 made free throws on Saturday and the Huskies made all 20 of their free throws in the fourth quarter and 35 of 36 in the game. Buonamici led North Marion with 33 points. Hannah Shriver scored 11 and Brielle Osborne 10 points.
Emily Saunders and Kara Sandy scored 16 points apiece for Wyoming East (22-4). Saunders set the Class AA state tournament record with 12 blocked shots.
PARKERSBURG 49, BUCKHANNON-UPSHUR 47: The Big Reds (22-6) won their first Class AAA girls basketball state championship since 1996 Saturday night, nipping No. 1 seed Buckhannon-Upshur (26-2) at the Charleston Civic Center.
Madi Mace led Parkersburg with 14 points and 13 rebounds. The Big Reds went 8 for 11 from the floor in the fourth quarter and held off a Buccaneers rally in the final 45 seconds.
Shaylee Kirby hit the two game-winning free throws with just eight seconds remaining.
WHEELERSBURG 66, PIKETON 50: The Pirates (21-3) defeated the Red Streaks (19-7) to claim the Ohio Division III Athens District tournament championship at the Ohio University Convocation Center in Athens, Ohio.
Piketon’s Tanner Perdue tied the game at 48 with a 3-point shot with 5:34 left in the contest. Tanner Holden followed with a 3-pointer of his own to give Wheelersburg a lead it never relinquished. The Pirates steadily pulled away in the remaining minutes to advance to the regional semifinals to play Harvest Prep on Wednesday, March 14, in Athens.
PEEBLES 75, GREEN 56: Tanner Arey and Bostin Robinson led the Indians (13-9) to a win over the Bobcats in the Ohio Division IV Athens District championship game at Ohio University.
Peebles moves on to play Coal Grove (19-5) at 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 13, in Athens in the regional semifinals.
