Elyria police shoot suspect in confrontation at apartment

ELYRIA, Ohio — A man was shot Tuesday night by Elyria police after confronting officers with a handgun during a domestic incident at an apartment complex near downtown.

The 27-year-old suspect was in unknown condition Wednesday morning after undergoing surgery at University Hospital in Cleveland.

Officers were called to Riverside Court Apartments at 120 Riverside Court at 8:26 p.m., Lorain County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Det. Capt. Donald Barker says.

When police arrived, they could hear yelling and items being thrown and broken in an apartment on the second floor, Barker says.

Police banged on the door of the apartment but got no answer. While waiting for a pass key, the suspect walked out of the apartment holding a handgun and threatened officers, Barker says.

Police fired an unknown number of shots at the suspect, hitting him once. The man continued to resist and police also had to use a Taser, Barker says.

No one else was in the apartment and there were no other injuries.

The sheriff’s department and the Lorain Police Department will investigate the shooting. Investigators are not identifying the officer who shot the suspect at this time.
