Assault on democracy

August 30, 2018 GMT

It makes me both sad and mad to see what Trump is being allowed to do to our country with essentially no “checks and balances” and no resistance from within the Republican Party.

His actions should be of grave concern to anyone who cares about the future of our nation. The country has changed a lot in my 70+ years; most of it good. However, nearly all of Trump’s actions and words are in strong conflict with what this country has stood for, for over 230 years.

If you are not outraged by Trump’s actions and behavior you are not paying attention to what he is doing in an effort to take over the country and put it under his authoritarian control.

His actions divide us more each day. What we now have in the White House is a trash-talking bully, racist, bigot, and power monger who in fact, contrary to what he utters among his abundance of lies, cares nothing about the average citizen or the country!

He has stoked the fires of hate, and continues to do so. Impulsive and with no thought or prior re-negotiations whatsoever, he has unilaterally withdrawn the U.S. from vital trade, climate and disarmament agreements.

He stirs up hate and violence against the news media and calls them “dangerous and sick” and the “enemy of the people” (Stalin and Mao Zedong and other dictators have also used this verbiage against any opposition).

It’s quite obvious to many of us who the real enemy of the people is and it is NOT the news media! Based on his past and present attempts to silence any opposition, it would be no surprise as if he felt he now has the power to dictate what the news media can and cannot release.

He has pulled, or is threatening to pull, security clearances on some of our nation’s most trusted former high level intelligence and law enforcement officials, as a threat and intimidation tactic, with the intention of silencing those who may have access to classified documents/information that can uncover some of Trump’s cover-ups, collusion, and corruption.

His actions and behavior are clear indications of a desperate person who obviously has a lot to hide. He praises and supports dictators while discrediting our own intelligence and law enforcement agencies.

The real icing on this cake is when the heads of these agencies met at a White House press briefing in early August and confirmed that Russia did in fact meddle in the 2016 election and are doing so again in preparation for the 2018 elections; and Trump is nowhere to be seen in support of these agencies and their findings.

He then sides with Putin by subsequently, and once again, calling the Russian meddling in our elections a “hoax.” This is a clear betrayal of trust bordering on treason; a very visible demonstration of where his true allegiance lies, and it certainly is NOT to the U.S. Constitution and the United States of America!

Putin is NOT our friend or ally but our adversary and will do whatever it takes to overthrow our democracy, and he is getting the help he needs from within. A full-blown assault on our democracy by Trump is now in progress!

The distinct possibility, and perhaps now the probability, exists that Trump, will fire or direct the firing of special counsel Robert Mueller, or he may personally take over the investigation based on the following comment he made on Aug. 20.

His comment, referring to the Mueller investigation, and you’d better sit down for this, “I could go in and I could do whatever. I could run it if I want.” These words from the person who sits in the Oval Office should run a “chill down your spin.”

Absolute and total abuse of power is the only way to describe it! Trump now feels that he is omnipotent and so far above all laws that he can do whatever he wants with essentially nobody in the Republican Party having the backbone to challenge his dictatorial behavior.

If any of the above actions regarding the Mueller investigation were to come to pass, it can only be categorized as an another attempt to obstruct justice while claiming the investigation to be no more than a “witch hunt” and costing the government a lot of money.

What’s really a big waste of government money is Trump’s numerous boondoggles to his various resort properties.

Former CIA Director, retired Air Force four star general Michael Hayden (his security clearance is another one on the Trump “chopping block”), has stated “the erratic behavior and policy on behalf of the Trump administration is a top threat to both national security and the security of other nations” and he went on to say “we are, to put it simply, the most destabilizing force in the world today.”

What is going on in the U.S. Congress and this country where Trump’s dictatorial and authoritarian behavior is being allowed to continue unabated!

Is the Republican-dominated Congress in a permanent state of hibernation, in total awe of Trump, or afraid he might threaten or intimidate them in one of his tweeter outbursts, or they might lose their seat in Congress if they don’t bow down to him and declare their forever loyalty; most likely all of the above.

There comes a time when people must put their country first and make the necessary sacrifices and that time is NOW. Every person in this country who cares about the survival of our democracy, and that’s what it’s really all about under Trump, needs to put partisan politics and Trump loyalty aside and do what is right this November and start the healing process and the reuniting of the United States.

Trump’s words and actions have been very clear and ominous. It should be quite apparent by now that he will do whatever it takes, and whatever he can get away with, to stay in absolute and total power.

There is little doubt that Trump doesn’t care what the U.S. Constitution says and certainly is NOT living up to it and the Presidential Oath of Office (ref: U.S. Constitution, Article II, Section 1, last para.).
