Jackson to release names of officers in fatal shootings
JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — The mayor says Mississippi’s largest city will start releasing the names of police officers involved in fatal shootings.
Jackson Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba tells news outlets that he will sign an executive order soon to set a new policy. It will require the release of names within 72 hours of a shooting. Names would be withheld if there is a credible threat to an officer’s safety.
The policy is based on a recommendation from a citizens’ task force.
Jackson’s recently confirmed police chief, James Davis, says he supports the transparency policy.
Seven officer-involved shootings have occurred in Jackson since Lumumba became mayor on July 3, 2017. Lumumba says the new policy will be retroactive, so those names will be released.
