Japanese Is First to Reach North Pole by Motorcycle

April 21, 1987

TOKYO (AP) _ Japanese adventurer Shinji Kazama has become the first person to reach the North Pole by motorcycle, a staffer at his Tokyo office said Tuesday.

Satomi Morikawa said the 36-year-old Kazama, owner of motorcycle shops in Tokyo, had set out from the Wardhunt islands in Canada, accompanied by three Japanese and two Eskimos on two snowmobiles.

They covered about 1,250 miles on snow and ice in 44 days, Ms. Morikawa said. The North Pole is 470 miles north of the Wardhunt islands.

Ms. Morikawa said the report of Kazama’s success came from a base camp at Resolute in Canada, where the staff has communicated with him via satellite.
