Stamford: Land-use committee recommends City Reps take up Life Time petition
STAMFORD — Board of Representatives Tuesday evening took the first step in verifying a petition that could have the full board overturning the Zoning Board’s move to allow stand-alone gyms in office parks.
After three hours of discussion, the board’s Land Use-Urban Redevelopment Committee voted unanimously to recommend verifying a heavily contested petition, casting away advice from city attorneys, who said it did not contain enough signatures.
Opponents had gathered nearly 700 signatures, but city attorneys said fewer than 300 — the required number — should count.
Zoning’s move to allow stand-alone gyms paves the way for a Life Time Fitness center in a Turn of River office park, which would not have been allowed without the change.
