Sydney win again to stay top in AFL
MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Sydney overcame the absence of superstar Lance Franklin to beat Essendon 11.13 (79) to 8.9 (57) and reinforced their position atop the Australian Football League table after the weekend’s 19th round.
Franklin was a late withdrawal from the match with a knee injury but the Swans still managed to return to winning form after last weekend’s loss to Hawthorn ended their 12-match winning streak.
Luke Parker had a career-best 35 possessions while Ben McGlynn, Adam Goodes and Kurt Tippett kicked two goals apiece as Sydney stayed atop the table on percentage.
Geelong beat North Melbourne 6.15 (111) to 10.19 (79) and Hawthorn beat the Western Bulldogs 16.11 (107) to 6.9 (45) to match Sydney’s 14-4 record.
Fremantle are fourth after their 12.11 (83) to 11.12 (78) win over Carlton.
