MANDAN, N.D. — Heidi Heitkamp is a first-term Democratic senator running for re-election this year in North Dakota, one of the most Donald Trump-friendly states. She’s maneuvering herself as both an ally of the president on policy and a polite opponent at other times. Heitkamp’s record of championing some of Trump’s proudest deregulation moves has frustrated Republicans, who’d like nothing more than to paint her as obstructing him. MINNEAPOLIS — A North Dakota food critic who received some snarky criticism of her own for her glowing review of a Grand Forks Olive Garden said it was “wonderful” when Anthony Bourdain came to her defense in 2012. Marilyn Hagerty said she met with Bourdain in New York as he was thinking of publishing a book of her small-town restaurant reviews. That book ended up being published, with Bourdain shutting down the critics in his forward, saying anyone who wasn’t charmed by Hagerty has a “heart of stone.” By Amy Forliti. MINOT, N.D. — The McHenry County Historical Society in North Dakota has acquired a 1906 building in the hopes of creating a museum. The Minot Daily News reports that historical society recently purchased the building from Towner. The city had used the building for storage. The Masonic Temple also had rights to the upper floor. The society is researching grants and aims to establish the McHenry County Western Museum. SENT: 250 words.


MANDAN, N.D. —A nonprofit is upgrading homes in North Dakota for people with physical or income limitations. Since its inception in 1997, Rebuilding Together Greater Bismarck/Mandan Area has enlisted thousands of volunteers to repair more than 160 homes, completing the work each spring. The nationwide movement began in Midland, Texas, in 1973, when a small group of people realized a growing need in the community. By Cheryl McCormack, The Bismarck Tribune.
