Man tries to drive truck into Parliament building

February 8, 1997 GMT

OTTAWA (AP) _ A man shouting about the devil drove his Jeep Cherokee up two flights of steps leading to the main Parliament building Friday, narrowly missing an employee who was cleaning the steps.

Witnesses say the man stopped the truck in front of the main entrance, got out and started yelling about politicians and ``devil worshipers.″

Police officers grabbed the man and placed him in a police cruiser. He then kicked out a rear window of the car with his feet.

The incident immediately touched off a debate about the adequacy of Parliament Hill security. Deputy Prime Minister Sheila Copps said non-government vehicles should be banned from the area.

Police said Roger Lamoureux, 35, of Cantley, Quebec, will be charged Monday with one count of dangerous driving and two counts of mischief. Lamoureux will be held for a psychiatric evaluation, police said.
