Florida officials restrict doctor from seeing women patients
POMPANO BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Florida health officials issued an order restricting a doctor from seeing female patients, saying he massaged a woman’s breasts when it was not medically necessary.
The Miami Herald reported Friday that Dr. Subhash Gupta received an emergency restriction order on Monday. The case began with a Sept. 7 emergency room visit of a woman who complained of inflammation in her lower abdomen.
The Florida Department of Health said the gastroenterologist put his hand underneath the patient’s shirt and cupped her breasts, asking her to take deep breaths. In a subsequent examination on Sept. 13, he did the same without warning or a stethoscope.
The woman’s problem had been diagnosed as colitis, an inflammation of the large intestine.
“Dr. Gupta cupping Patient S.L.’s breasts is outside the scope of practice and not for a medically recognized diagnostic or treatment purpose,” the health department said.
