Maui police say a hiker who was reported missing has been found dead.

Craig Pitt of Florida had not been seen since around noon Wednesday. The Maui News reported Pitt’s vehicle was found on the shoulder of the island’s Hana Highway on Friday. Authorities believe he planned to hike on one of the trails along Hana Highway, which runs near the coast in eastern Maui.

During a search, authorities found the body of a man at the base of a waterfall. Police said Sunday the body was positively identified through fingerprints as 35-year-old Pitt. The circumstances and cause of his death are still under investigation but police don’t suspect foul play.

Authorities say a solo hiker on Maui remained missing despite an ongoing search.

The Maui News reported Sunday that 35-year-old Craig Pitt of Florida had not been seen since around noon Wednesday.

Authorities say Pitt’s vehicle was found parked on the shoulder of Maui’s Hana Highway Friday.

Maui police and fire personnel began searching the bamboo forest area Saturday.

A social media page believed to have been posted by family members described Pitt as an “avid climber and hiker” who intended to explore waterfalls in the area.

Authorities believe Pitt intended to hike on one of the trails along Hana Highway, which runs near the coast in eastern Maui.

A police spokesman says members of the public should refrain from searching the area due to unsafe conditions.
