AAUW Garden Tour to showcase spring blooms next month
April showers bring May flowers ... and a garden tour will showcase several local gardens and their blossoming flowers next month.
The 26th annual American Association of University Women Garden Tour will feature several private home gardens and two public gardens in Yuba and Sutter counties on May 5.
“Regional artists will be featured in each of the gardens,” said Joan Young, with the AAUW, in a press release. “This is a self-guided auto tour and the gardens can be viewed in any order of preference.”
The rain or shine event, which is sponsored by the Marysville-Yuba City group, is the main fundraiser for the club’s efforts – including the annual eighth-grade girls’ STEM (Science, Technology Engineering and Math) Conference at Yuba College.
Last year, more than 700 students took part in the free event at the college and learned about career opportunities from numerous professional women who shared their stories of life, education and the workplace.
The club also awarded four scholarships to women studying STEM subjects at Yuba College and sponsored six seventh-graders to attend the week-long AAUW TECH TREK science camp at UC Davis in 2017.
“Martha Bunce, garden tour chair, said the Ag students at Marysville High School are making big preparations for the Garden Tour reception,” Young said. “They are so proud to be able to present their gardening projects on May 5.”
Tickets are $15 when purchased before May 4 at Sperbeck’s Nursery, Yuba City Florist, Union Lumber or from an AAUW member.
Tickets are available online for $20 at mvyc-ca.aauw.net and on the day of the tour, tickets will be $20 at all locations.
Ticket exchange happens between 9:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. where people can bring their pre-purchased ticket or online receipt to the ticket exchange table on Wilbur Avenue at C Street in Yuba City (next to Gauche Park).
Attendees can redeem tickets for a brochure showing locations of the gardens and a provided wristband will admit people to all gardens on the tour and reception.
Additional tickets can be purchased at the ticket exchange table for $20 per person. No credit cards will be accepted – cash and checks only. Maps and extra brochures can be picked up at the Garden Tour Reception after the Ticket Exchange table has closed.
