Second woman sentence to life in prison in man’s killing
LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — A second woman has been sentenced to life in prison in the killing of a man whose body was found inside a burning home near Lawrence.
The Lawrence Journal-World reports that 38-year-old Christina Towell, of Leavenworth, won’t be eligible for parole for 25 years under the sentence ordered Thursday in Douglas County District Court. She pleaded no contest last month to felony first-degree murder for helping to kill her cousin’s ex-boyfriend, 34-year-old Joel Wales, in November 2017.
Her cousin, Tria Evans, was sentenced to life in prison with no chance at parole for 50 years.
Evans and Wales had a child together and a history of domestic disputes. Prosecutors say text messages show that Towell and Evans plotted the death for more than a month and that Towell drove Evans to the scene.
