Barre officials vote to remove deed restrictions on building

October 21, 2018

BARRE, Vt. (AP) — Barre officials have decided to eliminate deed restrictions on a 140-year-old building that was previously owned by the city.

The Times Argus reports city councilors voted this week to ensure stipulations on the Barre Granite Association building were taken down. Restrictions on the Church Street building property had limited the building to being used as a religious, educational or office space. The restrictions were instituted in 1945 when the city sold the property.

The Barre Granit Association moved its office in 2016. Former Mayor Thomas Lauzon withdrew his bid to buy the building because of the deed restrictions.

City Manager Steve Mackenzie will work with the city’s attorney, Oliver Twombly, to remove the restrictions. Twombly believes the city used the deed limits as a way to preserve the area.
