Teacher convicted of failing to report suspected child abuse
ST. CHARLES, Ill. (AP) — A suburban Chicago elementary school teacher has been found guilty of failing to report suspected child abuse.
The Kane County State’s Attorney says a jury this week convicted 43-year-old Elizabeth Aguilar of Aurora of the misdemeanor.
The Associated Press sent an email Thursday seeking comment from her defense lawyer.
During the trial, prosecutors presented evidence that the teacher at Bardwell Elementary School in Aurora had reasonable cause in her capacity as a teacher in March 2018 to believe a child in her class had been abused and failed to report the abuse to the state’s Department of Children and Family Services as teachers are required to do in Illinois.
The school district says Aguilar was fired this month. She faces up to 364 days in jail when sentenced Nov. 13.
