Seniors practice ballet at Southbury’s Pomperaug Woods

January 30, 2018

SOUTHBURY — Once a month, residents in the Pomperaug Woods senior living community participate in ballet classes taught by Health Care Administrator Cassie Haley.

Haley, a classically trained ballet dancer, started the standing and sitting ballet classes after learning the health and mental benefits of the exercise. She taught ballet at another senior community before starting at Pomperaug three years ago.

“Ballet is a total mind-body exercise,” Haley said.

Studies show that listening to music and dancing can help seniors’ health. Haley also said she saw benefits for residents with dementia when working at the other community.
