Maine salmon farm builder pushes back at resident’s appeal

January 14, 2019

BELFAST, Maine (AP) — The developer of a salmon farm in Maine is locked in a dispute with a resident who is seeking to forestall the project.

Whole Oceans LLC has filed a motion with the state Board of Environmental Protection to try to dismiss a complaint from Holly Faubel, of Belfast, about the proposed salmon farm in Bucksport. The Bangor Daily News reports Faubel has appealed a wastewater discharge permit state regulators have issued.

Whole Oceans’ filing states that Faubel doesn’t have the standing to oppose the permit because she lives about 14 miles away from the project site. Faubel says she’s working on her own response and will speak publicly when finished.

The indoor salmon farm is scheduled for construction at the site of the former Verso paper mill in Bucksport.
