Lady Cougars come up short against Lady ’Stangs in league season opener
NEEDLES ― The Laughlin Lady Cougars are off to a rough start of season, going 0-2 against Needles in doubleheader action March 16. Laughlin lost 17-2 and 20-0.
Lori Morgon took to the circle for Laughlin. Morgon appeared to struggle some with several pitches hitting the ground and batters walked. She pitched two and one-third innings striking out one.
Jaycee Fragoso handled the pitching duties for Needles. While she gave up a couple of runs, she was supported by a strong defense that was near error free. The few mistakes that were made did lead to Laughlin runners getting on base and scoring.
Cougar batters connected but continued to hit at players. They couldn’t seem to find the gaps.
Jasmine Donnett went 1-for-2 at bat with a double and a run scored. Morgon went 1-for-2 at bat with a triple and a run scored.
Needles, on the other hand did find the gaps. Fielding errors by Laughlin helped keep Needles runners going and getting home for scores.
Things looked like they might pick up in the second game for Laughlin. The Lady Cougars didn’t get much offense going, but pitching, handled by Caitlyn Schelper, and solid defensive play, took Needles out quick in the first inning. Both teams were scoreless going in to the second.
The switch flipped and Needles took control of the game. The Lady Cougars didn’t record a hit in that game.
Coach Aaron Schellie said Laughlin gave up a lot of extra bases and outs. Good teams take advantage of those things and that’s what Needles did, he continued.
There’s still a lot of positives to take away from the games, Schellie said. The top of the line up along with Ashley Bishop, did a great job of putting the ball in play, he added.
He said he always tells the team they just need to work to get better every day. When it comes down to it, it’s about consistency, he continued.
“We showed flashes and held them scoreless at times, but then we would give up a bunch of runs the next inning,” Schellie said.
The girls will host Mohave Accelerated in a nonleague game Wednesday, March 21 at Cougar Field. The girls play at 3 p.m.
Laughlin then hits the road to take on The Meadows in Las Vegas. The girls play at 1 and 3 p.m. Thursday, March 22.
